Fur Flower in the Sun

Monemvasia, Greece ~ shared by r. Theodore and Irena 2026

In the featured photo, a sunbathing cat dozes contently on a shop’s sill. Behind, in the store window, is an Holy Icon of Our Lady Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary, holding Christ. She points towards the Lord, directing us to Him, Who is our guide to God and Salvation.

What is our life without cats? Cats are fur flowers. They can be made into bouquets. And blessed are the hands of those who comfort our little brothers and take care of these ‘flowers’. And I fervently believe, I am convinced: your cats will certainly put in a good word for you before God. ~ Archimandrite Savva Mazhuko

…they serve God in their place better than we in ours…~ St. Basil the Great (on animals in general)

In Paradise, the animals sensed the fragrance of grace and served Adam. Since the fall, nature has been suffering together with man… However, when a person returns to the state in which he was before the fall, animals again approach him without fear. …My mind tells me that even the animals are better than me; so, I humble myself and obey them. Very early this morning, being tired from praying all night and exhausted because of my illness, I lay down to rest. After awhile, I heard a kitten meowing outside my cell as if she needed something. I really wanted to rest, but I humbled myself and went against my own will. I obeyed the kitten and replied to her calling. I went to open the door. It had started to rain and I let her in so she wouldn’t get wet. What do you think then? Should I obey the animals or not? My thoughts tell me I should. ~ St. Paisios

St. Gerasimus was a great elder, and he had a lion. We are small, so we have cats. ~ St Nektarios of Optina

There’s an amazing spiritual bond between us and the natural world. We who are (and have been) blessed to be guardians (I won’t say owners – as cats believe they own us) of pets, have been gifted with a great Stewardship.

Asking God’s blessings on all creatures great and small, and for their human protectors who’ve received warm and loving paw prints that stay forever in their hearts. Let us rejoice in His creatures and relish those beautiful bouquets of fur flowers!

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? ~ Job 12:7-9

Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord. ~ Psalm 150:6

For Thine is the Kingdom…

Rugged Southwest Coast of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada

This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. ~ Psalm 118: 23-24

The sun rising over the earth creates the daylight; and the venerable and Holy name of the Lord Jesus, shining continually in the mind, gives birth to countless intellections radiant as the sun. ~ St. Hesychios the Priest; On Watchfulness and Holiness – Philokalia Vol. 1

But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? ~ Job 12: 7-9

On a recent trip, when the waves crashed upon stony beaches they sounded like giant sighs… as contented exhalations to their Creator. Spicy pine and fir trees dotting the cliffside above, lifted craggy, creaking boughs skyward to sway a Windy Dance of Praise.

And farther out upon the ocean? The dusky mantle of heaven parted like curtains allowing the sun to blast below a great, gladsome beam of sparkling diamonds. This raw, intense beauty made one’s heart pang with gratitude… that the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (St. John 1:5)

Mewling gulls zipped past, and the morning light flashed as silver on their white feathery breasts. Glossy otters and sleek seals placidly swam in the foreground, deeply intent on their first rounds of the day, with places to go and things to do.

It was beautiful. It was majestic. It was orderly. It was holy.

Animate and inanimate joined in one chorus, praising our Creator.

God is everywhere.

Even the humblest of surroundings become holy places!

They Speak to Us

Hornby Island Field of Miniature Wildflowers – Yarrow, Larkspur, Mouse-Ear Chickweed

Take delight in all things that surround us. All things teach us and lead us to God. All things around us are droplets of the love of God – both things animate and inanimate, the plants and the animals, the birds and the mountains, the sea and the sunset and the starry sky. They are little loves through which we attain to the great Love that is Christ. Flowers, for example, have their own grace: they teach us with their fragrance and with their magnificence. They speak to us of the love of God. They scatter their fragrance and their beauty on sinners and on the righteous. ~ St. Porphyrios of Kavsokalyvia

Nature is a Secret Gospel – and its healing, spiritual balm, blasts away any clutter or cobwebs in the mind. A restoring walk by the ocean, a river, the hills, the mountains, or in the breezy, spicy forests of birdsong, remind us of God’s Love.

It’s everywhere! It fills everything!

Even the tiniest of wildflowers exude the salvific, spiritual fragrance of God’s Ineffable Greatness…

And our soul’s heartfelt gratitude, draws us ever closer to Creation’s Planter!

With love in Christ.

The Sweeting

An early morning detente. Honey bee and tiny Hoverfly (a flower-fly that mimic bees in appearance but has no stinger) kindly share the same lavender blossom.

The bee is more honoured than other animals, not because she labours, but because she labours for others. ~ St. John Chrysostom

Like a bee that secretly fashions its comb in the hive, so also grace forms in hearts it own love. It changes to sweetness what is bitter, what is rough into that which is smooth. ~ Anonymous 4th century Egyptian monk

Sweeting
Those who resemble
the sweet honey bee,
Seek to find goodness
in all that they see!
~ a rhyme inspired/borrowed from St. Paisios’ honey bee verses fly quote below…

Some people resemble the honey bee and some resemble the fly. Those who resemble the fly seek to find evil in every circumstance and are preoccupied with it; they see no good anywhere. But those who resemble the honey bee only see the good in everything they see. ~ St. Paisios

If only we could more resemble the honey bee, and bee ye kinde one to another…

If we could try to see Christ Himself more often in others… we could, but only with Love of our neighbour… help change some of this world’s bitterness into sweetness!

Even just a little bit.

Spiritual Yum Yums

The various patristic texts, which thank God are available by the thousands today, are very helpful. One can find whatever one needs and desires in these books. They are authentic spiritual nourishment and a sure guide on the spiritual path. However, in order to be of benefit to us, they have to be read with humility and prayer… We do not need great knowledge to be devout. If we concentrate and ponder on the few things we know, our heart will be spiritually embroidered. One may be profoundly affected by a single hymn, while another may feel nothing, even though he may know all the hymns by heart, as he has not entered into the spiritual reality. So, read the Fathers, even one or two lines a day. They are very strengthening vitamins for the soul. ~ Elder Paisios the Athonite

Rejoicing in His Creatures

Image by Dimitris Vetsikas from Pixabay

When God, who is absolute fullness, brought creatures into existence, it was not done to fulfill any need but so that His creatures should be happy to share His likeness, and so that He himself might rejoice in the joy of His creatures as they draw inexhaustibly upon the Inexhaustible. ~ St. Maximus the Confessor

Love all God’s creation, the whole of it and every grain of sand. Love every leaf, every ray of God’s light. Love the animals, love the plants, love everything.  If you love everything, you will perceive the divine mystery in things. ~ Fyodor Dostoevsky

I will never laugh at anyone for grieving over a loved beast. I think God wants us to love Him more, not to love creatures (even animals) less. We love everything in one way too much (i.e., at the expense of our love for Him), but in another way we love everything too little. No person, animal, flower, or even pebble has ever been loved too much – i.e., more than every one of God’s works deserves. ~ C. S. Lewis

…Animals can instinctively sense if you love them. The animals in Paradise felt the fragrance of Grace and served Adam. Since the transgression, nature groans together with man… My mind tells me that even the animals are better than me; so, I humble myself and obey them. With love and gratitude to my past creatures (dogs, rabbit, goldfish, birds and cats), who’ve made my life richer… Such a blessing to have been their human for a time!

Oh… and last but not least, cheers to the current grand-cat-by-default… who deigns to allow me to feed her treats.

All Things Are Near to God

Who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the birds of the heavens? ~ Job 35:11

..surely we ought to show kindness and gentleness to animals for many reasons, and chiefly because they are of the same origin as ourselves.~  St. John Chrysostom

Man is not a being isolated from the rest of creation; by his very nature he is bound up with the whole of the universe… In his way to union with God, man in no way leaves creatures aside, but gathers together in his love the whole cosmos disordered by sin, that it may be transfigured by grace. ~ St. Maximus the Confessor

All things are near to God, says the Russian proverb. Truly everything is near: all spiritual, and sentient creatures, the Angels, the souls of the departed, all living men, all animals, all material worlds. The Spirit of God passes through all things, a reasoning pure, most refined Spirit, dwelling in every believing, pious soul. “The wild beasts of the field are in my sight (Psalm 1:11),” says He. “I am with you always, even unto the end of the world (St. Matthew 28:20).” As an infinite Spirit, to God nothing is far away, but all things are in Him. All things live and exist in Him.~  St. John of Kronstadt
